Classical Fencing Demo at Dunbar Community Centre

1/10/2016

Picture
The Renaissance Fencing Club will be presenting a demonstration of Classical Fencing in the Dunbar Room of the Dunbar Community Centre at 6pm on Thursday, January 14, 2016.  A variety of weapon systems from the 18th & 19th centuries will be presented .
There will also be an exploration of how exercises such as footwork, and plastron lessons all help develop the strategic Classical fencer.  Those who are interested in the Classical Fencing courses offered by the Dunbar Community Centre are highly encouraged to attend this demonstration.

Also, please note that the regularly scheduled novice class will be cancelled that evening while Group 1, 2 & 3 will have their class rescheduled to 7:30-8:30pm that evening and will take place at OLPH.  There will be no Group 3 Foil & Poignard class that evening.  All students & parents are welcome to attend this demonstration.

On Tuesday, January 12th, 2016 at 12pm, the Renaissance Fencing Club and Salle Saint-George will be presenting a demonstration of Classical Fencing in the Agora of the AMS Nest.  This is a unique opportunity to observe a tradition that is a descendant of the martial arts of Europe.  A variety of weapons ranging from the Foil to Spear will be demonstrated showing how scientific principles were employed consistently through history to survive serious encounters.  This event will provide a glimpse into the Foundations of Classical Fencing course offered by UBC Recreation on Saturday, January 23, 2016.

Photo Session: Saturday, November 28, 2015

11/26/2015

Many members have remarked on how much they've enjoyed the photos on the website.  What many of you may not know is that the photographer for many of the pictures is none other than our Vice-President, Mr. Todd Sankey.  As Mr. Sankey and I were taking some publicity photos last week, it occurred to us that many fencers and parents may like to have fencing photos taken for their own personal collections.  On Saturday, November 28th from 9:30-10:30am, Mr. Sankey has kindly offered to set up his equipment to take pictures for any member who would like to have some fencing photos done.  While there is no cost involved, we may choose to use some of the photos taken for promotional purposes if you have signed a photo consent form.  Please feel free to take advantage of this opportunity if you are interested.

Movie Night & DVDs

6/25/2015

From 5:30-9:00pm tonight, we will be holding Movie Night at our usual location in the OLPH gym.  The main purpose of Movie Night will be for our fencers to review their footage during the Mock Tournament held on April 25, 2015 and Concours Internationaux held on May 9, 2015.  In addition to reviewing tournament footage
though, we will also be screening a classic swashbuckling film.  Tonight will also be a potluck dinner so if anyone would like to bring any food or beverages items, that would be most welcome.  Since I have also purchased some extra food, beverages, plates, cutlery & napkins, fencers who did not have time to prepare anything for tonight are welcome to contribute by a monetary donation as well.  Any funds raised will go to paying for tonight's costs and next year's Concours Internationaux.  Also, due to time limitations, there will be no free fencing tonight so you will not have to bring equipment.  I have outlined a brief schedule for tonight below:

5:30-6:45pm           Doors Open & Tournament Footage Review
6:45-9:00pm         Screening of selected swashbuckling film followed by dismissal

As an added intiative this year, Prévôt Longino and I have been hard at work compiling individualized commemorative DVDs of this year's Concours Internationaux.  Each DVD contains a special video of highlighting the event as well as formal assault footage of each fencer from both the Mock Tournament and Concours Internationaux 2015.  This is a great souvenir to keep track of your individual development as a fencer this year and a great way to show your support for next year's Concours Internationaux.  Each DVD is $25 and, once again, all proceeds will go to supporting next year's tournament.  I look forward to seeing you tonight.

Fiesta Days 2015

6/18/2015

On Saturday, June 20, 2015, the West Point Grey community will once again be celebrating Fiesta Days.  This year, we will be participating in the annual parade but will not be performing on stage.  Instead, at the conclusion of the march to Trimble Park, we will be doing some free fencing by the baseball diamond at the northwest corner of the park.  This will also be an opportunity for members of the community to observe what we do and ask any questions they may have about classical fencing.  The schedule for the day will be as follows:

9:00am - Gather at the OLPH gym to drop-off fencing bags and check attendance
9:15am - Walk from OLPH gym to parade rallying point at W.12th Ave. & Blanca St.
9:30am - Assemble at rallying point to rehearse marching drill and light practice
10:00am - Parade begins
11:00am - Conclusion of parade at W.8th Ave. & Discovery St.
11:05am - Pose for group photo before walking to the Trimble Park baseball diamond
11:10am - Free assaults of Foil, Foil & Poignard, and Spear at the Trimble Park baseball diamond
11:45pm - Return to OLPH gym
12:00pm - Dismissal

Should anyone have any further questions, please let me know.  For more information about Fiesta Days, please refer to http://www.pointgreyfiesta.org/.  Looking forward to seeing all of you Saturday.

Location: Concours Internationaux d'Escrime de la Jeunesse (Bellingham Tournament)

5/8/2015

At long last, the Concours Internationaux d'Escrime de la Jeunesse 2015 is upon us.  Taking place from  1:00pm to 6:00pm tomorrow, the event will take place at the following location:

Crystal Ballroom
The Leopold
1224 Cornwall Ave.
Bellingham, WA
98225

I have included the map of the location at the top of this post.  Please make sure that you arrive slightly before 1pm as we will be adhering to a punctual schedule.  Street parking is free on Saturdays in downtown Bellingham and there are many spaces available.  Also, remember to bring snacks, water and a change of clothing along with your fencing gear.  In addition to looking at the cleanliness of Foils, the directors will also be looking at fencers' uniforms during the equipment check so please make sure that your uniforms are clean and have all the manufacturers' labels as well as the straps on the back of the masks removed.

Two further notes of interest is that the Leopold was a former hotel converted into a retirement residence and we have invited the residents of the building to observe the event.  Lastly, we will be taking video footage of the event so, if you are interviewed and do not mind being included in the video, please feel free to answer the questions asked by the interviewer.

I look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow and to a fine demonstration of Classical Fencing.

À demain!
Joseph Lai
