Workshop & FPHLunch - Saturday, April 20th
We will be holding a workshop and FPhLunch on Saturday, April 20th.  The topic of the workshop will be Foil and Poignard.  The cost will be $35 and a minimum of three people must be registered for the workshop to take place.

The topic of the FPhLunch will be "How to Learn to Use a Sword for Dummies - different ways to learn swordplay in the modern world".  The cost will be $25 and a minimum of five people must be registered for the FPhLunch to take place.


Club Closed - April 25th & 27th
There will be no fencing on Thursday, April 25th and Saturday, April 27th.  Please make a note of this on your calendars.

Private Lessons Rescheduled
Private lessons that were scheduled on Friday, April 26th have been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 24th.  If there are any conflicts or questions, please speak to Joe.

The Renaissance Fencing Club's Facebook page is now active!  For those of you with Facebook, please follow our Facebook page.

Group 1 Uniforms
For newer Group Ones, please have your full uniform ready by April 29th.  The requirement is either charcoal grey pants or breeches, or a charcoal grey skirt with leggings.

Guest Instructor - Kim Moser
Instructor Kim Moser of the Palm Beach Classical Fencing school will be visiting from May 3rd to May 6th.  He will be available for private lessons in the afternoon and evening of Friday, May 3rd.  Lessons will cost $45 for 30 minutes and $85 for one hour.  The deadline to register is Saturday, April 13th at 1:00 pm.

Workshop  - Saturday, May 4th
On Saturday, May 4th, Instructor Moser will be leading a workshop on "bridging the gap".  This workshop will focus on applying the techniques learned in drills to the assault.  The deadline to register is Saturday, April 13th at 1:00 pm.

Club Dinner
We are planning to host a dinner with Instructor Moser on Friday, May 3rd.  This will be held at 7:30.  More information will be available in the coming weeks.  If you are interested in attending this dinner, please email Joe.  The deadline to register is Saturday, April 13th at 1:00 pm.

Food Bank Drive
We will be holding a food bank food drive beginning Monday, March 11th.  Anything you can contribute will be much appreciated.  When bringing donations in, please place them inside the blue bin on the stage.  If you would like suggestions on what to donate, please look at the list on the lid of the bin.

Club Closed - Saturday, March 23rd
There will be no fencing on Saturday, March 23rd.  Please make a note of this on your calendars.

Workshop & FPHLunch - Saturday, March 30th
We are holding a workshop and FPhLunch on Saturday, March 30th.  Group 1, 2, and 3 foil class will be from 9:30 am - 10:30 am on that day.  The topic of the workshop will be the duelling weapons, épée and sabre.  The cost will be $35 and a minimum of three people must be registered.  The topic of the FPhLunch will be on cross-training techniques.  The cost will be $25 and a minimum of five people must be registered.  These workshops are open to Group 2s and Group 3s, as well as students over the age of 14.  The registration deadline is Saturday, March 16th at 1:00 pm.

Guest Instructor - Kim Moser
From May 3rd to May 6th, Instructor Kim Moser will be visiting from Florida.  He will be available for private lessons on Friday, May 3rd.  The cost is $45 for a 30 minute lesson and $85 for a 60 minute lesson.  In addition, a workshop led by Instructor Moser is being planned for May 4th.  More information will be coming out shortly.

Monday, February 18th Classes
Joe will be away on Monday, February 18th.  Foil class will be led by Mr. Juan Abello and poignard class for Group Threes has been cancelled.

Club Closed - Thursday, February 21st
There will be no fencing on Thursday, February 21st.  Please make a note of this on your calendars.

Workshop & FPHLunch - Saturday, March 2nd
We will be holding a FPhLunch and workshop on Saturday, March 2nd.  The workshop will be held from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.  The topic of the workshop will be the tactical use of the prise du fer and attaque à fer, and the topic of the FPhLunch will be discussing the aristocratic mindset.

The cost of the workshop is $35 and the cost of the FPhLunch is $25.  The registration deadline is Saturday, February 16th at 1:00 pm.  We need five people registered to hold the FPhLunch and three people registered to hold the workshop.

Seattle Workshops - March
There will be a workshop on Medieval sidesword at Salle Saint-George in Seattle in mid-March.  If you are interested, please speak to Joe.

There will be a workshop on stage combat at Salle Saint-George in Seattle in late March.  This workshop is being led by Maître Kirby.  If you are interested, please speak to Joe.

Invoices
Invoices have been sent out to most Group Ones and will be sent to Group Twos and Threes shortly.  Due to a busy schedule, these invoices will include all balance owing from April 2018 to November 2018.  Private Lessons, Workshops, and Unofficial Sessions during November and December of 2018 will be included in the next invoice.

Club Closed - Thursday, January 24, 2019
There will be no class on Thursday, January 24th.  Please make a note of this on your calendars.

Workshop - January 26, 2019 - Open to G2s and G3s
There will be a workshop on the dueling weapons, sabre and epée, held on Saturday, January 26th from 10:30 am - 12:30 pm.  The cost is $35 and the workshop is open to Group 2s and Group 3s, or students over the age of 14.  Please register by email with your weapon preference before Saturday, January 19th at 1pm.  A minimum of five participants need to be registered to hold the workshop.

FPhLunch - January 26, 2019 - Open to All
We will be holding a FPhLunch on the topic of the Aristocratic Mindset on Saturday, January 26th from 12:30-2:30 pm.  The cost is $25 and is open to anyone interested.  The deadline for registration is Saturday, January 19th at 1pm.  A minimum of five participants need to be registered to hold the FPhLunch.

Invoices
Invoices will be being sent out shortly.  Please make your payments as soon as possible once you have received your invoice.  Payments may be made by cheque, cash, or e-transfer.  If payment is being made in cheque or cash, please ensure that it is in an envelope with the student's name clearly printed on the outside.  When bringing payment in to class, it may be placed on the white binder on the stage or given to the Chef de Salle or l'Assistant de Salle.

Congratulations Mr. Abello
As both the Chef de Salle and l'Assistante de Salle have begun university and therefore will be more inconsistent in their attendance, it has been decided that Mr. Juan Abello will be appointed as the Acting Deputy of the Chef de Salle.  The Chef's Deputy is an Officer of the Salle who is responsible for acting as the eyes and ears of the Chef and l'Assistante when they are both absent.  He has the responsibility for ensuring the rules of the Salle are followed, and has the power to deal with minor infractions while reporting more major or repeated infractions to the Chef.  Please treat Mr. Abello as you would any Officer of the Salle.

Novice & G1 - Monday, September 10th
There is a revised schedule for Monday, September 10th, as the school will be using the gym for a concert.  Novice and Group 1 foil class will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 pm.

All Levels - Saturday, September 22nd
There is a revised schedule for Saturday, September 22nd.  Novice, Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3 foil class will be held from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Poignard Workshop - Saturday, September 22nd
There will be a poignard workshop on  Saturday, September 22nd from 9:30-11:30 am.  This workshop is open to students in Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3, and the cost will be $35.  This workshop will be structured as a clinic where fencers of different levels will be given drills specific to their ability so as to improve their understanding of the science of fencing.  A minimum of three students must be registered for this workshop to run, and there are six spots open in total.  The deadline for registration is Saturday, September 15th at 12:30 pm.

FPhLunch - Saturday, September 22nd
We will be holding a FPhLunch on Saturday, September 22nd from 12:30-4:00 pm.  This is open to students in Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3, and the cost is $25.  The topic will be "Fencing and Travelling": we will be looking at why taking part in fencing training trips are an invaluable to becoming a well-rounded fencer; we will also look at how to plan for the time and expense of fencing trips, as well as what trips we are planning for 2019.  The lecture will be followed by board games.  A minimum of three students must be registered for the FPhLunch to take place, and there are ten spots open in total.  The registration deadline is Saturday, September 15th at 12:30 pm.

Club Closed - Saturday, September 29th
There is no fencing on Saturday, September 29th.

Lightsaber Workshop - Saturday, September 29th
There will be a lightsaber workshop on Saturday, September 29th from 5:00-7:00 pm at Salle Saint-George in Seattle.  The cost will be US$105 for the workshop, or US$190 for the workshop and a lightsaber to keep.  If you are interested and would like a ride to Seattle, please speak to Joe: there are six spots available for a ride and there will be an additional charge for gas.  The registration deadline is Saturday, September 15th at 12:30 pm.

September Beginners' Class
Beginners' classes will be starting on Thursday, September 27th.  The children's class will be from 5:30-6:15 pm and the adult class will be from 7:45-8:30 pm.  Cost is $55.  Registration can be done either through the Dunbar Community Centre or by an email to Joe.

Q3 and Q4 Invoices
There are still a few people who have not made payment for their Q3 Invoices.  Please do so as soon as possible.

Q4 Invoices will be sent out shortly.  Please keep an eye out for them in your email and make payment as soon as possible.


Equipment Rental
For students renting equipment, a new payment method for rentals is being introduced in 2018.  A guide will be sent out to you by email shortly.

Saturday, March 31st Schedule Change
On Saturday, March 31, 2018, Group 1, 2 and 3 Foil Class has been moved to 9:30-10:30am.  Please make a note of this on your schedules.

March Workshop and FPHLunch
On Saturday, March 31, 2018, a Workshop and FPhLunch have been scheduled.  The topic for the Workshop is "the Prise de Fer".  In addition to looking at this important set of techniques and how they apply to Foil, we will also be looking at how they are used in the secondary weapons that are currently being studied by Group 2 and 3 students.  The topic of the FPhLunch is Combatcon in Las Vegas, Nevada.  We will discuss the curriculum, experience, and logistics of this one-of-a-kind event.  We will also have a guest speaker on hand discussing the subject of summer employment for high-school students and how to save for medium-term goals.  The cost for these events are $35 and $25 respectively.  The deadline for both is March 8, 2018 at 9pm.  Please register by email.         

Salle Saint-George Workshop
On Saturday, March 24, 2018, Salle Saint-George is hosting a workshop on "The Art of Communicating with Confidence".  The workshop will be taking place from 1-2:30pm.  If you are interested in taking part, please let Joe know also by March 8, 2018 at 9pm by email.  More information can be found at  bravenewyou.net/events/the-art-of-communicating-with-confidence/

Palm Beach Classical Fencing Open Tournament
Instructor Kim Moser of Palm Beach Classical Fencing would like to invite fencers of RFC to take part in this year's Palm Beach Classical Fencing Open Tournament on Sat, April 7,2018 in West Palm Beach, Florida. January Workshop
There is a workshop scheduled for Saturday, January 27, 2017 from 9:30am-11:30am.  The focus of this workshop will be looking at the disarm and its various applications.  The cost is $35.  It is open to students in G1, G2 and G3 who are 12 years-old and above.  The workshop will require a minimum of 4 students registered to take place. Registration is by email  and the deadline to register is Saturday, January 13, 2017 by 12:30pm.  A late fee will be applied to any registration requests after the deadline has passed.

January FPhLunch
There is a Fencing Philosophy Lunch (FPhLunch) scheduled for Saturday, January 27, 2017 from 12:30pm-4:00pm. The theme for this FPhLunch is on "Goal-Setting and Realization".  Of course, lunch is included with the class and we will also host a brief round of board games following the talk.  The cost is $25.  It is open to students in G1, G2 and G3 and will require a  minimum of 4 students registered to take place.  Registration is by email and the deadline is on Saturday, January 13, 2017 by 12:30pm.  A late fee will be applied to any registration requests after the deadline has passed.

January 27, 2018 Foil Class
Novice, G1, G2, and G3 Foil has been moved to 11:30-12:30pm for Saturday, January 27, 2018.

Reminder to G2s
We also wanted to remind students in G2 that students should continue doing their warm-down exercises after class ends at 7:30pm on weeknights.  We advise you to arrange to be picked-up at 7:45pm to accomodate time for this. ​

Food Bank Drive

November FPhLunch
There is a Fencing Philosophy Lunch (FPhLunch) scheduled for Saturday, November 25, 2017 from 12:30pm-4:00pm.  

December Closure
The last day of fencing for 2017 will be on Saturday, November 25, 2017.  Class will resume on Thursday, January 4, 2017.  Unofficial sessions may be scheduled throughout December.  More information will be provided over the next several weeks.

Winter Holiday Sessions
There are four potential dates for unofficial sessions in December.  They are as follows:

Thu, Dec 21 – Nov & G1: 4-5pm / G2 & G3: 4:30-6pm
Sat, Dec 23 – Nov & G1: 1-2pm / G2 & G3: 1:30-3pm
Thu, Dec 28 – Nov & G1: 4-5pm / G2 & G3: 4:30-6pm  
Sat, Dec 30 – Nov & G1: 1-2pm / G2 & G3: 1:30-3pm 

If you are interested in taking part in any of these sessions, please email Joe by Thursday, November 23, 2017 at 9:30pm at the latest.  There is a $10 drop-in fee and there needs to be a minimum of 4 people signed up for each class to take place.

L'Assistant Chef de Salle - Ms. Bianca Lok
We would like to congratulate Ms. Bianca Lok.  Effective October 1, 2017, she will be taking on the role of L'Assistant Chef de Salle or L'Assistant de Salle for short.  the L'Assistant de Salle is the deputy of the Chef de Salle.  She is responsible for the duties delegated to her by the Chef when he is present; and the entirety of his duties when he is not.  If there is any confusion about proper salle conduct from students, the Chef and L'Assistant de Salle are the authority on the subject.


October Beginner Class
Children, Parents, and Adults beginner courses will start Thursday, October 5, 2017.  If you have friends or family who are interested in learning Classical Fencing, please let them know. 

Club Closures
There are two dates that the club will be closed this month.  We will be closed Monday, October 9, 2017 for Thanksgiving and Saturday, October 14, 2017 due to the OLPH school's Harvest Fair.  Please make a note on your calendars.


October FPhLunch
There is a FPhLunch and Workshop scheduled tentatively for Saturday, October 14, 2017 both led be 
Maître Longino.  Most likely, the FPhLunch will be on the subject of etiquette and will be an expansion on the workshop done at Classical Fencing at Fort Langley back in June.  The workshop's subject as well as the cost, venue, and deadline for registration for both events will be announced next week. 

University of Toronto Historical Fencing Club
If you have any friends or family attending the University of Toronto, the University of Toronto Historical Fencing Club will be holding a demonstration of Classical Fencing at 1pm at the Hart House on October 16, 2017.  Both Joe and 
Maître Longino will be assisting with this demo.  More information will be made available as we get closer to the date. 

New York City Convivium
The Martinez Academy will be holding a special event called the Convivium from Friday, October 20, 2017 to Sunday, October 22, 2017 in New York city.  The event is a celebration of Maestro Ramon Martinez's 35th anniversary as a Classical Fencing Master along with Maestro Jeanette Acosta-Martinez's 17th anniversary.  The programme for the weekend is filled with various activities.  If you are interested in attending and would like to get more information, please contact Joe.
